Stephen Allwood
Stephen Allwood is based in Martinborough, in the Wairarapa. Alongside his partner, chef Jo Crabb, he spends part of the year living and working in small village in the South of France. These two regions, notable for vineyards and agricultural industries, influence and inform his work.
Drawing inspiration from his surroundings, the landscape, the seasons, and the day-to-day events of his semi-rural lifestyle; from the shearing shed and farm animals, to his enviably well-stocked pantry, Allwood seeks - and finds - beauty in the quotidian.
Trained as a printmaker, he now works mainly in oils on canvas, and his paintings retain a freshness and immediacy that conveys as much about the art of painting, as it does about the subject.
Allwood was born in Fiji and grew up in Masterton He graduated from Ilam, Canterbury with a BFA in 1982. He has been painting and exhibiting regularly in Wellington and Auckland since the 1990s and his sought-after work is held in collections throughout New Zealand.
