Karen Walker, Mikhail Gherman and family at the opening of The Captains Series

Captains Ahoy!

20 - 28 March 2024

It was a great pleasure working with Karen and Mikhail on Mikhail’s maiden voyage as an exhibiting artist. We very much look forward to seeing where his creative genius takes him next. If you missed out, a few matchbox Captains are still available…

Tony Lane Paintings

Opens Tuesday 6 September, 5–7pm

You are invited to view the latest paintings by Tony Lane.

Lane’s visual language is deeply connected to painting’s history, from thirteenth century Italian painters such as Giotto to the Spanish still-life painters of the seventeenth century and through to his New Zealand upbringing and exposure to New Zealand as a place that would imprint its landforms into his psyche. His mountain ranges are infused with an almost ethereal light, at times resting below the sea, or snow covered, they are volcanic, familiar to us, just as they were in the Renaissance, as emblems of beauty, majesty, and mystery.

Meet the artist –
Wes Fieldhouse

Saturday 20 August, 1–3pm

Come along to meet Wes and hear his insights into the work in his exhibition, Wes Fieldhouse – A Matter of Time.

Over some 30 years of exhibiting, Wes Fieldhouse has presented everything from photorealism and romantic landscapes through to highly provisional abstraction. True to form, this exhibition marks another stylistic shift. This absence of a signature style is not, however, a result of a lack of critical focus. It is a conscious decision to reject the traditional demand for aesthetic consistency.

Cheers Ponsonby!

24 December 2021

Thank you for giving us such a warm welcome to the neighbourhood and for making our first twelve months such a pleasure. The doors will be closed from 24 December through 17 January but you can always reach us on mobile if there is something you must have. Otherwise, we’ll see you in 2022.

What’s it about?

24 November 2021

At the heart of it is a campaign led by a collective of New Zealand’s leading galleries. It functions as a reminder of the vital role galleries play in the art ecosystem.

New Zealand has over 50 independent art galleries which showcase the work of thousands of local and international artists each year. Together, we support artists with much needed income, ongoing career guidance, and hands-on support throughout their careers – working with each of them to reach new audiences through exhibitions, events, and publishing.

When you buy from a gallery, you’re not only helping artists – you’re doing your bit to keep Aotearoa’s art community flourishing. Good on you.

The doors are open!

11 November 2021

We are so happy to be back! Fully vaccinated visitors are now warmly welcome into the gallery. To ensure the safety and comfort of our clients, artists and staff, everyone must scan in, wear a mask, and maintain a 2M distance between other visitors. We look forward to seeing you – long hair and all…

The joy of window shopping

13 September 2021

During this lockdown, we are taking a cue from Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's and celebrating the joys of window shopping. Every few days, we will be putting a new piece in the window just to make life a little more interesting for anyone strolling along Ponsonby Road.

Our fifteen minutes of fame...

1 March

Thanks to Editor Martin Leach, a life-long Scottie dog fan, we find ourselves on the cover of our local magazine, Ponsonby News. The dogs look fabulous. Pity about the human props blocking out the best thing on the shot: the Tony Lane landscape in background. More inside p.96/97

The Goldilocks Effect

20 October

There is no such thing as being too fussy. We spent the past 8 weeks scouting around for new premises and, like Goldilocks, we found everything too hot, too cold, too big, or too small. Until now…

Kindred Spirits: John Madden & Barry Brickell

29 September

In recent years, John Madden spent a great deal of time in the company of his great friend, potter Barry Brickell, at Driving Creek in Coromandel. Madden was introduced to Brickell by another of his early mentors, painter Toss Woollaston. Both of these iconic New Zealand artists recognised in Madden a kindred spirit.…
