Encompassing images from around Whangarei and the Kaipara as well as Westland in the South Island artist and mathematician Peter James Smith is always inventive, always discovering, and here presents us with some of the largest single piece canvases he has ever completed. And it is all to capture the glory of the land or seascape and to give us a sense of wonder at the poetry of mathematics and place on a grand scale.

Objects too, have always held a place of fascination in Peter James Smith’s work; collected rather than ‘found’, the repurposing and reimagining of them has given new life to items as varied as rulers, trays, biscuit tins, scales, and pieces of Wedgewood. Entire shows have been devoted to them both in New Zealand and Australia and here he presents us with a selection of new items that we can only marvel at.
