Born in Auckland New Zealand, Simon Allison was educated at Nelson College. He trained at the Canterbury University’s Ilam School of Art, where he graduated in 1978 with a Diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. Allison then joined The Court Theatre as a scenic artist and set designer. In 1981 he was awarded, N.Z. Arts Council grant to travel and study theatre in Australia. He travelled extensively in the United States and Canada then arrived in England in 1984 and after a brief trip to Europe set up Red Bronze Studio; the fine arts casting foundry in London.
In 1993 he moved business to Oxfordshire becoming Lockbund Sculpture fine art bronze casting. Living with his wife and their children, he developed the business and expanded into large studios and gallery exhibition space, now known as Lockbund Sculpture Gallery that holds a major exhibition every spring.
Allison’s early works dealt with the subjects of landscape and the human condition within that landscape, often with strong theatrical imagery. He works with a variety of materials including stone wood bronze glass and often with various materials in combination. His scale is constantly monumental but his work ranges in size from the hand held to 50 metres. Working with a strong physical and direct material language, Allison’s sculpture often discusses the power and fragility of the physical and spiritual balance.Download Simon Allison CV
